The enneagram is a nine-pointed, starlike figure that models the relationships between interacting parts of an evolving system. It was apparently discovered by the Sufis 2,500 years ago, but there's some controversy about its history. The relationships it models apply to a wide range of phenomena.

For centuries, the enneagram was relatively unknown, being a closely held secret of certain mystical groups. Today, the most common view of its origins is that it was known to the Sarmoun Brotherhood of Sufis, who used it as part of their mystical training.

The enneagram (or something very much like it) was bound to be discovered by wise visionaries, in some form, at some point in history. Its inner structure echoes important universal principles, and its dynamics model many kinds of processes, including those that operate inside the human psyche.

In this century, the enneagram has been "brought public" by a succession of teachers, starting with Gurdjieff, and continuing with Oscar Ichazo, Claudio Naranjo, and the more recent enneagram teachers, including Helen Palmer, Don Richard Riso, and many others.

Currently, the enneagram's most visible application is in psychology, as a dynamic model of personality. Its use is rapidly increasing among psychologists, counselors, and even in business. Enneagram workshops are springing up everywhere.
Is it a meaningless symbol?
Is it a new-age fad?
Is it a psychological system?
Is it a spiritual tool?
Is it a message from God?
